Can Someone Else Book Your Driving Test in 2026? New DVSA Rules for Nantwich Learners
If you are learning to drive in Nantwich, you may have heard that the rules for booking and managing a practical car driving test changed during 2026.
The most important change is simple:
Only the learner driver can book, change, swap or cancel their own car driving test.
That means your driving instructor, parent, partner or another booking service cannot complete the booking for you. They can still support and advise you, but you must manage the booking yourself through the official GOV.UK service.
These changes were introduced to make test appointments fairer and to prevent unofficial booking services from bulk-booking slots and reselling them.
Here is what the new rules mean for you if you are looking for driving lessons Nantwich, or if you are a parent or partner helping a learner prepare for their test.
The 2026 DVSA rules at a glance
The changes were introduced in stages:
- From 31 March 2026: you can make a maximum of two changes to your car driving test appointment.
- From 12 May 2026: only the learner can book, manage, change, swap or cancel the test.
- From 12 May 2026: unofficial services that scan the booking system for appointments are not allowed.
- From 9 June 2026: you can only move your test to the centre you originally booked or one of the three nearest test centres.
The rules apply to car driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales. They do not apply to motorcycle or vocational tests in the same way.
For the latest official information, read the DVSA guidance on the 2026 driving test booking rules.
Can your instructor book your driving test for you?
No.
Before 12 May 2026, a driving instructor could book or manage a test on a learner’s behalf. That is no longer permitted.
Your instructor can still:
- Talk to you about whether you are ready.
- Help you understand the booking process.
- Advise you about a suitable test centre.
- Give you their driving instructor reference number.
- Check that they are available to accompany you on the test date.
- Support your preparation through lessons and mock tests.
However, you must be the person who makes the booking and agrees to the DVSA terms and conditions.
This is why good preparation matters. You should not feel pressured to book a test simply because an appointment appears. Speak to your instructor first and choose a date when you realistically expect to be test-ready.
Can a parent or partner book it for you?
No. Your parent, partner, friend or another family member cannot book, change, swap or cancel your car driving test for you.
They can still help, provided you are with them and involved in the process. For example, they may be able to:
- Sit beside you while you use GOV.UK.
- Help you understand the questions.
- Support you with language or accessibility needs.
- Help you contact DVSA if you cannot complete the process online.
You should use an email address and telephone number that you can access easily. Most importantly, you need to complete as many of the booking steps as you can yourself.
If you need help, that is completely understandable. The rule is not intended to stop parents and partners supporting learners. It is designed to make sure that the learner remains in control of their own appointment.
Why did the DVSA change the rules?
For some time, unofficial third-party services, booking websites and automated systems were searching for driving test appointments.
Some services used bots to find and secure slots quickly. Others bulk-booked appointments and then offered them to learners, sometimes at inflated prices.
This created several problems:
- Learners struggled to find appointments through the official service.
- Test slots could be taken before ordinary learners had a fair opportunity to book.
- Some people paid additional fees to access appointments.
- Instructors and learners had less control over suitable test dates.
- Popular test centres experienced even more pressure.
The new rules have ended the use of unofficial third-party booking services for this purpose. You should book and manage your test only through the official GOV.UK service.
Be cautious if a website or individual promises to secure a test for you, especially if they ask for your login details or payment to access appointments. Using unofficial services can put your booking at risk. DVSA may suspend online access or cancel a booking if its terms and conditions are broken.
What the two-change limit means
Since 31 March 2026, you can make a maximum of two changes to your existing car driving test appointment.
A change includes:
- Moving the date.
- Moving the time.
- Moving to another test centre.
- Swapping the appointment with another learner.
If you change more than one detail at the same time, such as the date and test centre, it still counts as one change.
If you use both changes and then need another appointment, you will generally need to cancel the existing booking and make a new one. DVSA states that you can receive a full refund when cancelling at least 10 full working days before the test date.
This makes it especially important to choose a realistic date. Do not book simply because it is the earliest appointment available if you and your instructor do not believe you will be ready.
Where can you move your test?
From 9 June 2026, you can only move your test to:
- The test centre where your appointment is currently booked; or
- One of the three nearest test centres to that centre.
You can initially book at any test centre, but you should choose one you genuinely intend to use.
For a learner in Nantwich, this means discussing your likely test location with your instructor before booking. Your instructor can help you understand the local roads, test-centre arrangements and the type of preparation you need.
You should not assume that you will be able to book at one centre and later move easily to another part of the region. The new rules make that much more limited.
How to book your test as a Nantwich learner
When you are ready, follow this process:
1. Pass your theory test early
You need to pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test.
Leaving your theory test until the last minute can delay your progress. With NRDS, you receive free online theory test training to help you prepare alongside your practical lessons.
2. Speak to your instructor
Ask whether your driving is becoming consistent and whether you are ready to start looking at test dates.
Readiness is about more than completing a certain number of lessons. You should be able to drive safely, independently and confidently in a range of situations.
3. Get your instructor’s reference number
You can enter your instructor’s reference number when booking. This helps the booking system check whether your instructor is available for the chosen date.
Your instructor can provide the number, but you must make the booking yourself.
4. Choose a realistic date and centre
Consider your progress, your instructor’s availability and the test centre you actually intend to use.
Remember that you have only two changes available. Careful planning protects your confidence and avoids unnecessary disruption.
5. Book directly through GOV.UK
Use the official GOV.UK car driving test booking service. Do not use cancellation-finder websites, apps or people offering to book on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions
Can my instructor sit with me while I book?
Yes. Your instructor can support and advise you, but you must be present and complete the booking yourself.
Can my parent book the test if I give them my details?
No. Giving someone your details does not allow them to book the test for you. You must remain involved and complete the booking action.
Can I use a cancellation-finder service?
No. Unofficial services that scan the DVSA booking system for appointments are not allowed under the new rules.
What happens if I change my test twice?
After two changes, you will generally need to cancel the appointment and make a new booking if you need a further change. Check the latest DVSA guidance before taking action.
Can I book any test centre?
You can initially book at any available centre, but choose carefully. Once booked, your test can only be moved to the original centre or one of the three nearest centres under the new rules.
When should I book my practical test?
Book when your instructor agrees that you are making reliable, safe progress and are likely to be ready by the test date. Passing your theory test early gives you more flexibility.

You are still in control of your driving journey
The 2026 rules may seem restrictive at first, but they also give learners more direct control over their test booking.
Your instructor, parent or partner can still be there to support you. They just cannot make the booking decision or complete the booking action for you.
With the right preparation, you will know when to book, which test centre to choose and what to expect next. You will have your theory test completed, your practical skills developed and your test date selected with confidence.
Nigel Richards Driving School has helped generations of learners progress towards safe, independent driving. With our 4-Stage System, free online theory training, experienced instructors and more than 500 five-star Google and Facebook reviews, you have a strong support team behind you.
