Essential Tips for Driving in Ellesmere Port

Mastering Ellesmere Port’s Roads

Driving around Ellesmere Port can be challenging for learners, particularly on busy routes like Sutton Way, Whitby Road, and around the Cheshire Oaks area. Large roundabouts, fast-moving traffic, frequent lane changes, and heavy shopping traffic mean you’ll need good observation, planning, and lane discipline. To build confidence, start practising these routes during quieter periods, focusing on early mirror checks and clear signalling. Gradually increase the complexity as traffic levels rise to help you stay calm, safe, and in control in busier conditions.

Conquering Chester’s Busy Roundabouts

Ellesmere Port features several challenging roundabouts, particularly along Sutton Way, Whitby Road, and near the M53 junctions, which often appear on test routes. With your instructor, you’ll practise lane discipline, reading traffic flow, and making safe, confident exits — even at busy times.

At NRDS, we offer high-quality driving lessons in Ellesmere Port using a proven, results-driven training system refined over 30 years. Motorway lessons on the M53 and M56 are also available with our Approved Driving Instructors.

Adam is beyond amazing at teaching, I had no driving experience to start with and he always made me feel safe and like I could do it. Being a very nervous person I found the thought of doing the test very stressful and scary and it started to show in my driving as the test started to come closer but Adam was nothing but positive and patient, he went above and beyond to fit in lessons and always put in 100% teaching effort. Would recommend to anyone!

Recently passed 1st time after being taught by David Johnson. He adapted the lessons around my learning style (e.g. asked if I'm a visual or other style of learner early on) & kept very organized track of my progress via a notepad as well as having a booklet illustrating different driving skills. Communication wise was engaged & thorough. So David was an effective, adaptive & practical driving instructor who I strongly recommend. -Ross

Frequently Asked Questions

If you haven't driven before and will not be able to have any private practice in between your lessons then it takes about 45 hours of tuition to get to the driving test standard in Ellesmere Port.

This can vary greatly from person to person and in my experience the younger the person is the quicker they learn. So another good guide is 2 hours for every year of your age. The older you are the longer it takes you to learn to drive.

Ellesmere Port is a great place to take your driving test but it can also be quite challenging especially the roundabouts near Cheshire Oaks.

The test centre is located at Unit 16, Dunkirk Trading Estate, Telford Court, Gates Ln, Chester CH1 6LT

This is the buildings opposite side of the road to Costco

The driving test is now much more of a "Driving Test" as the manoeuvres elemnt has been changed quite significantly from what is was years ago.

The three point turn and left reverse are now not included.

The Emergency Stop is not a compulsory exercise on every test but it is tested on 1 in 3 tests. This has now changed at some test centres to 1 in 7 from May 2025.

Candidates are asked to perform ONE reversing exercise from four possible ones. They are:

Parallel Parking

Drive into a parking bay and reverse out

Reverse into a parking bay

Pull over on right side of the road and reverse back two car lengths before re-joining the traffic.

There is also 20 minutes of "Independent driving" where the candidate has to follow a Sat Nav of follow signs for somewhere from Ellesmere Port.

You are allowed to commit up to 15 minor driving errors on the test. If you get over 15 then it would result in a fail.

Or if you commit one major error then you automatically fail.

A major error is something that "Could have or Did affect another road user"

When taking driving lessons in Ellesmere Port, it's generally advised to schedule at least one two-hour session each week. This consistent frequency aids in retaining information and developing driving skills effectively. However, for those facing budget constraints, some instructors recommend opting for two-hour lessons every fortnight as a feasible alternative. This approach balances financial considerations while ensuring steady progress in learning to drive.

In recent years the driving test has changed to represent a more realistic "Driving Test" rather than more of a manoeuvring style test of previous generations.

The three point turn and the left reverse are no longer included.

But there are four reversing exercises of which you will do just ONE.

They are:

Reverse Park behind a car on the road.

Pull over on Right hand side of the road and reverse back 2 car lengths before re-joining the traffic.

Reverse park into a parking bay

Drive forwards into a parking bay and reverse out.

Often the Reverse bay parking is done in the Ellesmere Port Driving Test Centre at the beginning or end of the Driving Test.

Need driving lessons in Ellesmere Port with a female instructor? We’re here to help! Our experienced female driving instructor offers a calm, supportive, and professional approach to learning, making sure you feel confident behind the wheel. Whether you're a beginner or looking for extra practice before your test, we provide tailored lessons to suit your needs.

Your driving test will last for approximately 40-45 minutes. You will be asked to pull over numerous times for various testing of your moving off skills and to do a reversing manoeuvre. Although recently there have been proposed changes to reduce the amount of pulling over to increase the driving time. Also the Emergency Stop will now be one in seven tests rather than the current one in three.

Also its been proposed that the whole test will be taken with directions from a Sat Nav rather directions from the driving examiner
