Essential Tips for Driving in Shrewsbury

Mastering Shrewsbury’s Historic Roads

Driving through Shrewsbury’s narrower town-centre roads, particularly around areas like Castle Street, Wyle Cop, and the Quarry side, can be challenging for learners. Tight road widths, parked vehicles, busy junctions, and frequent pedestrian crossings mean good clutch control, observation, and planning ahead are essential. To build confidence, practise these routes during quieter periods first, then gradually introduce busier times. This will help you stay calm, controlled, and smooth when dealing with slow-moving traffic and unexpected hazards.

Conquering Shrewsbury’s Busy Roundabouts

Shrewsbury has several challenging roundabouts, particularly around Meole Brace, Battlefield, and Dobbies Island, which often feature on local test routes. Working with your instructor, you’ll practise correct lane positioning, judging traffic flow, and making smooth, well-timed exits. With regular practice, these roundabouts will start to feel far more natural—even during busy peak times.

Gaining Confidence on Dual Carriageways

Around Shrewsbury, roads such as the A5, A49, and sections of the A458 provide ideal conditions to develop your higher-speed driving skills. You’ll learn how to join traffic safely, maintain appropriate speeds, deal with dual-carriageway sections, and overtake confidently where appropriate. Your instructor will guide you on these faster roads, helping you feel calm, controlled, and prepared for independent driving after passing your test.

Adam is beyond amazing at teaching, I had no driving experience to start with and he always made me feel safe and like I could do it. Being a very nervous person I found the thought of doing the test very stressful and scary and it started to show in my driving as the test started to come closer but Adam was nothing but positive and patient, he went above and beyond to fit in lessons and always put in 100% teaching effort. Would recommend to anyone!

Recently passed 1st time after being taught by David Johnson. He adapted the lessons around my learning style (e.g. asked if I'm a visual or other style of learner early on) & kept very organized track of my progress via a notepad as well as having a booklet illustrating different driving skills. Communication wise was engaged & thorough. So David was an effective, adaptive & practical driving instructor who I strongly recommend. -Ross

Frequently Asked Questions

If you haven't driven before and will not be able to have any private practice in between your lessons then it takes about 45 hours of tuition to get to the driving test standard in Shrewsbury.

This can vary greatly from person to person and in my experience the younger the person is the quicker they learn. So another goo guide is 2 hours for every year of your age.

The test centre is located at  Stafford Dr, Shrewsbury SY1 3BF

And the telephone number is 01743 466906

The driving test is now much more of a "Driving Test" as the manoeuvres elemnt has been changed quite significantly from what is was years ago.

The three point turn and left reverse are now not included.

The Emergency Stop is not a compulsory exercise on every test but it is tested on 1 in 3 tests.

Candidates are asked to perform ONE reversing exercise from four possible ones. They are:

Parallel Parking

Drive into a parking bay and reverse out

Reverse into a parking bay

Pull over on right side of the road and reverse back two car lengths before re-joining the traffic.

There is also 20 minutes of "Independent driving" where the candidate has to follow a Sat Nav of follow signs for somewhere. The Sat Nav will be provided by the examiner at Shrewsbury Driving Test Centre

You are allowed to commit up to 15 minor driving errors on the test. If you get over 15 then it would result in a fail.

Or if you commit one major error then you automatically fail.

A major error is something that "Could have or Did affect another road user"

When taking driving lessons in Shrewsbury, it's generally advised to schedule at least one two-hour session each week. This consistent frequency aids in retaining information and developing driving skills effectively. However, for those facing budget constraints, some instructors recommend opting for two-hour lessons every fortnight as a feasible alternative. This approach balances financial considerations while ensuring steady progress in learning to drive.

In recent years the driving test has changed to represent a more realistic "Driving Test" rather than more of a manoeuvring style test of previous generations.

The three point turn and the left reverse are no longer included.

But there are four reversing exercises of which you will do just ONE.

They are:

Reverse Park behind a car on the road.

Pull over on Right hand side of the road and reverse back 2 car lengths before re-joining the traffic.

Reverse park into a parking bay

Drive forwards into a parking bay and reverse out.

Often the Reverse bay parking is done in the Shrewsbury Driving Test Centre at the beginning or end of the Driving Test.

The examiner expects the mirrors to be checked before you:

  • Change Direction
  • Change Speed
  • Signal

The operative word there is BEFORE! So, before any of these situations occur you should assess what is about you.

A good example being before you Change Direction. Say you approaching a parked vehicle on the left. You should check both the interior mirror and then the Right hand mirror to ensure there is no other road user overtaking you!

We hope this helps you understand when and why to check your mirrors on your driving lessons and during the driving test.

The theory test ca be taken before or whilst having driving lessons in Shrewsbury. But you have to pass the theory test to "Apply" for a driving test. It is designed to assess your understanding of the rules of the road and your ability to recognize potential hazards while driving. The test is divided into two main sections:

1. Multiple-Choice Questions

  • Number of Questions: The multiple-choice section is 50 questions.
  • Content: Questions cover a wide range of topics including road signs, speed limits, vehicle handling, and the Highway Code. There are also questions related to road safety and environmental issues.
  • Time Limit: You have 57 minutes to complete this part of the test.
  • Pass Mark: To pass the multiple-choice section, you need to correctly answer at least 43 out of 50 questions.
  • Special Features: The test is taken on a computer, and you can go back and forth between questions by flagging the questions to go back to.

The only documentation you need to bring to you driving lesson is your Provisional Driving Licence.

Many people think they are have to have insurance etc but all our cars are insured for any driver to learn to drive in.

When attending for the driving test you are asked to also bring your theory test pass certificate. However, this is rarely asked for.

Test routes in Shrewsbury will include a mix of urban and rural roads, dual carriageways, and complex junctions. You will also likely encounter various road types and traffic systems.

The centre conducts standard car driving tests, motorcycle tests, as well as tests for other types of vehicles, including large goods vehicles (LGVs) and passenger-carrying vehicles (PCVs). So be aware of other vehicles when leaving and returning to the test centre.

Part of the test includes 20 minutes of independent driving, where you will be asked to follow directions from a sat nav or follow traffic signs to reach a destination, such as Telford or Oswestry.

During your test, you will be required to perform one reversing manoeuvre. This could be parallel parking, parking in a bay, or pulling up on the right and reversing for two car lengths. This could be done in the test centre or in a Shrewsbury supermarket carpark.

Finally, be aware of local driving challenges in Shrewsbury, such as narrow streets in the town centre, busy roundabouts, and various pedestrian crossings. Familiarity with these areas can help in your test preparation.

Before you get into your car at the start you be asked a question on general safety and maintenance.

You be asked another question as you are driving on the test.

Here is the official website for the questions

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/car-show-me-tell-me-vehicle-safety-questions

Your driving test in Shrewsbury will last for between 40-45 minutes.

During this time you will be tested on all different types of roads. From rural back roads to fast moving bypass style roads. However there isn't any real dual carriageways as such in Shrewsbury that have slip roads to emerge out of.

It's important to bring your provisional driving licence to your first lesson. Also, wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes and bring any corrective lenses if you need them for driving.

Whilst we don't normally do Intensive courses there are certain pupils who we find are suitable so we need to do an assessment lesson first to ensure there is a reasonable chance of attaining the test standard in the time required.

Basically it is s big ask to go from complete beginner to test standard in a few days. The average amount of hours required to reach test standard is 45 hours tuition and 22 hours private practice. So to get that in with in a few days is a big aske. We find Semi-intensive courses work well..

At Nigel Richards Driving School (NRDS), our driving lessons are designed to prepare you for more than just your driving test — we prepare you for safe, confident driving for life.

While some driving schools focus purely on passing the practical test, our experienced driving instructors teach the skills needed for real-world road safety. That includes understanding how your brakes and ABS work, managing emergency stops, and adapting your driving to different road and weather conditions.

During your lessons, you’ll learn:

How to control your car safely in real traffic situations

How to perform an emergency stop with confidence

How braking distances change in wet, icy or busy road conditions

How to anticipate hazards early and make safe driving decisions

How to stay calm and in control under pressure

We follow a structured training plan that builds strong foundations in vehicle control, hazard perception and independent decision-making — all essential skills for safe driving after you pass.

By the time you take your driving test, you won’t just be test-ready.

You’ll be fully prepared for everyday driving on today’s roads.
